This depends entirely on what you need. A small site can run as little as $500. Mid-level designs, however, run an average of $1500. Large, detailed projects can cost $5000 or more. None of this takes in account advertising or the cost of doing business either. I recommend that individuals or small businesses have at least $5000 on hand for expenses. Some of this will go to design, some to marketing, most to external expenses related to the site. Even if you don't end up spending that much it's better to over budget than to come up short.
